Ithaca Hours are a form of localized alternative currency in relatively common use. Concentrated in Ithaca, New York "HOURS" are considered a form of alternative currency that is backed by labor itself rather than a scarce commodity. In practice, products and services are traded at varying amounts much like regular currency. The name "hours" is maintained to indicate to the holder that it represents actual labor.
