The American Workers Party was formed in 1933. It formed out of the Conference for Progressive Labor Action which had become more radical since its 1929 formation due to the Depression. The American Workers Party's members included A J Muste and Sidney Hook.

The American Workers Party (AWP) was involved in the 1934 Toledo Auto-lite strike. The AWP, which was also involved with the Unemployed League, encouraged unemployed workers to walk on the Auto-lite picket line. With much of Toledo's workers unemployed at the time, this helped win the strike.

In December of 1934, the AWP merged with the Communist League of America to form the Workers Party of the United States.
