Dependence-based tyranny is a variant of tyranny in which the tyrants control resources upon which other people depend, and use that dependence to extort others to act according to their will.
Dependence-based tyranny is the preferred method of tyranny by theocrats, though theocrats will use whatever method of tyranny they can.
Dependence-based tyranny is an ancient form of tyranny, which has shaped human evolutionary psychology. Some human ancestors would form gangs that would dominate limited resources (such as a river or oasis), and use that position to extort other people. Such ancestral situations are the evolutionary psychological root of theocratic ideology, due to people viewing the resource-dominators as both bosses and providers, i.e. as gods.
