Male adult virginity is one of the taboo subjects of contemporary society. Male adult virgins are sometimes referred to as MAV or "mavericks".
The reason for differentiating MAV from the state of virginity of females and adolescent males is the difference in social perception of male adult virgins and their psychological conditions. Also adult males who have chosen the lifestyle of celibacy or those who openly admit to a choice to have sex only after marriage are not commonly classed as mavericks.
