The Chipko movement was an environmental movement in the 1970s in the Uttarakhand region in India. It was an organized resistance to the destruction of forests. The movement started in 1972 in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and later expanded west into the middle Himalayan region. It involved nonviolent direct action.[1] Chipko is a Hindi word which means "to hug". The members of this movement hugged trees to prevent them being cut by foresters.[2] This why it is named "Chipko movement". The Chipko movement was founded by Sunderlal Bahuguna.[3]
