Sundarlal Bahuguna is an Indian environmentalist[1] known for his role in the Chipko movement, which was one of the world's first major environmental movements.[2] He joined the Indian independence movement at the age of 13 and was Congress Secretary of Uttar Pradesh in 1947. In 1954, he married Bimla Behn.[3]
Sundarlal Bahuguna helped bring the movement to prominence through a 5,000 kilometer trans-Himalaya footmarch in 1981-83, and met the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The meeting resulted in green-felling ban by Gandhi.[4]
Bahuguna still lives on the banks of the Bhagirathi River and opposed the construction of the Tehri dam out of the fear it will displace many people and could be an ecological disaster.[2]
