The Iraq War (also known as the Second Gulf War, the Occupation of Iraq,[1] or the War in Iraq) is an ongoing multinational military campaign which began on March 20, 2003 with the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It began as a mission by the United States and her allies to depose Saddam Hussein, dictator of Iraq, and determine if Iraq owned any weapons of mass destruction, but evolved into an attempt to mediate between the Sunnis and Shias.
