Jabber is a popular, open protocol for instant messaging. The messages are sent unencrypted, and travel through a network of Jabber servers. Unlike in IRC, there isn't a limit on the number of servers that can compose this network, and any Internet node can theoretically run a Jabber server. However, some service providers, like Google, have decided to create a separate, closed network for their customers.
