The United States Department of State (also called the State Department) is the Cabinet-level foreign affairs agency of the United States government, similar to foreign ministries in other countries.[1][2] The Secretary of State is the cabinet officer responsible for the Department. The department is one of the three original departments created by the United States Congress in 1789.[3]

Hilary Rodham Clinton, the current Secretary of State, was appointed in January, 2009.[2]
