The Cable News Network (CNN) is a news cable television network based in the United States. It was launched on June 1, 1980[1] as a subsidiary of the Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc.[2] by Atlanta-based entrepreneur Ted Turner.[3] At the time of its establishment, it was the first twenty-four-hour rolling news television channel.[1]
When the CNN was first launched in 1980, it had a million seven hundred thousand household subscribers. In 1985, a new channel CNN International was launched[4] and it developed a substantial overseas presence. CNN played a significant role in the Gulf War in 1991.[3] The CNN's global reach has multiplied seventy folds since the time of its launch.[4] Today CNN programming is viewed worldwide and it has more viewers outside the United States than within.[5]
