Taiwan, also known as Formosa, is a disputed island in East Asia. Taiwan is not recognized as an independent state by most countries. The People's Republic of China maintains that Taiwan is a breakaway province and is a part of China, while Taiwan claims it is a sovereign country. Its government is known as the Republic of China.
