A flag is a cloth representation of national or political identity, though in some cases flags are used for signalling/communication (their original purpose).

There are various flags in the anarchist movement, the most well-known being the black flag. There are variations on the black flag such as the black and red flag (used to represent anarcho-syndicalism, a combination of the anarchist black flag and the socialist red flag) and the black and green flag (used to represent green anarchism).

As flags can be an important form of identification with a particular country or movement, flag desecration is an act of symbolic protest against a given group. For example, desecrating the flag of the United States (usually by burning it) is often a political statement against U.S. goverment policies or American cultural practices.
