All major wars incur losses of material goods and manpower, to say nothing of the loss of human life and destruction, all of which impose a humanitarian burden during and following the conflict. The term War Wastage was common from the beginning of the 20th Century, and the concept was common even earlier,[1] but its use has declined. This article presents the wastage rates of recent major wars. Although it is a major concern of peace activists, mainstream arguments against war have inexplicably turned their attention to the costs of maintaining and equipping military forces, rather than the sheer cost incurred by the damage caused by their operations.[2]
