Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 in the city of [[Stavropol]], then part of the [[Soviet Union]]. As a teenager he worked on [[farm|collective farms]].

== Party career ==
He was a 1955 law graduate of the [[Moscow State University]]. While at the university, he joined the [[Communist Party of the Soviet Union]] and became an active member. As a rising star in the Party, he was known for advocated for better conditions for farmers. in 1979, he became a member of the [[Politburo]], one of the most powerful government agencies in the nation. When [[Konstantin Chernenko]], General Secretary, died in 1985 after only one year of leadership, it was decided that a younger man would be better fit for the job. At 54, Gorbachev was appointed General Secretary.

== General Secretary ==
As General Secretary, Gorbachev began [[glasnost|relaxing the censorship of the press]] and [[perestroika|reforming the economy]]. Also, he looked for a way out of [[Afghanistan]]. By 1991, Gorbachev's policy of freedom of speech led to the secession of the republics from the [[Soviet Union]]. After the dissolution was complete, Gorbachev resigned.

[[Afghanistan]] dissolved into civil war until 1996, when the [[Taliban]] seized power and instituted an [[Islam|Islamic]] [[theocracy]].

The camp takes place from the 25th of September to the 3rd of October. If you want to go to the No Border Camp and are still looking for people to share a car with you, accompany you when hitchhiking or whatever, put your preferred place and time to start into the list below and wait for people to contact you. (For this to happen, of course, you need to provide some kind of information on how you want to be contacted.)
