The Gini coefficient (WP) is a measure of inequality of variance. It is often applied to measure inequality of incomes in a particular area. 0 represents complete equality, i.e., every person has the same income, and 1 represents complete inequality, i.e., where one person has all the income and others have none. The information was tabulated in 2009 from data from the US census. Alaska shows the flattest income distribution while the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and New York State have the largest income disparities between wage earners in all income categories.

By way of reference, the US is ranked 98th out of 135 countries for which data is available in even the CIA's accounting of the Gini coefficient[1]

However, this does not include the perspective of world average income, where it is seen that people in the US are quite rich and the income disparity is in comparison to the staggeringly rich (See the numbers at Egalitarianism). The average world income is, in one sense, US $ 10,741.50[2][3] This is under the 'poverty line' in the USA. The average US income is US $ 47,482.46[4] [5]
