For different approaches see cold fusion

Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons have reported in 1989 March 23 that they have produced nuclear fusion during the experiment involving electrolysis of heavy water on a palladium electrode. The report stated that the "excess heat" could only be explained by the fusion processes, the two scientists also stated that they have found small amounts of byproducts normally associated with nuclear fusion.

Today the scientific community has dismissed the claims, as there were problems with reproduction of the experiment and it was found (was it?) that the nuclear byproducts were not actually present in the original experiment. Some scientists who currently do research in the field of cold fusion call it "low energy nuclear reaction" or "condensed matter nuclear science" to avoid the negative connotation of the term.
