This is a logo for Operation Gladio in Italy post-WWII. A secret organization, Operation Gladio was code for a NATO sleeper cell, in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Europe, and to conduct anti-communist actions. 'Gladio' is specific to the Italian section of the NATO stay-behind orgs, but "Operation Gladio" is used for all such orgs, & is sometimes referred to as "Super NATO". Gladius is a type of Roman short sword, pictured.
The manner extent and means of the CIA's involvement in Gladio operations, during the Cold War era and the Years of Lead right-wing terrorist attacks is the subject of debate and research to the present day
Use of the logo complies with fair use under United States copyright law: The image is used to identify the organization Operation Gladio, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.
